Recently I had the opportunity to do some training in a rather unique area of Yoga known as Hormone Yoga Therapy, which focusses on reactivating the body’s hormone production. The teacher and the founder of this technique is Dinah Rodriguez, a yoga therapist from Brazil. I attended one of her courses in June 2016. At the incredible age of 89 years, she taught the whole course, demonstrated the asanas, and explained the whole technique herself. She says if we practice Hormone yoga therapy, we can look and feel 10 – 15 years younger and she is the perfect proof of that! As far as I am aware there is not another Yoga teacher in Bristol who teaches this technique.
Hormone yoga therapy focuses on reactivating the production of hormones which can help to eliminate symptoms of menopause, PMS, polycystic ovaries, and infertility. Dinah recommends the practice to all women over 35 whether experiencing symptoms or not. Our hormones naturally change from this age onwards and practicing HYT can keep levels balanced and raised and reduce discomfort experienced when entering menopause. HYT is a combination of asanas, breathing techniques and the subsequent circulation of energy that stimulates the glands and increases the production of hormones. It is a dynamic technique which involves strong abdominal breathing. The sequence consists of several exercises which should be practiced in the order that they are taught as each one of them has a special impact on a particular area. Together they harmonise the hormonal system as a whole.
Symptoms and conditions treated by HYT:
- Hot flushes
- Urogenital dryness
- Low libido
- Bladder infections
- Night sweats
- Polycystic ovaries
- Thyroid imbalances
- Painful periods
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Pregnancy: pregnant women should practice only a special yoga for pregnancy.
- Breast cancer hormone dependent, before or after surgery.
- Advanced endometriosis
- After surgery of aesthetic breast – only with medical liberation for exercises
- Person with psychiatric problem
Research shows that the progesterone and oestrogen our bodies naturally produce provides the best protection against diseases like Breast Cancer, Osteoporosis and Heart Disease and menopausal symptoms without the danger of side effects associated with HRT or low hormones.
Dinah Rodrigues graduated in psychology and was always interested in yoga which she has now practiced for more than 50 years. Nowadays she is an internationally recognised yoga therapist. It took her approximately twenty years to develop the concept and teachings of HYT. She used techniques from classical hatha yoga, classical medicine, and physiotherapy. At each step she consulted with well recognised doctors, yoga teachers, and therapists. HYT was tested scientifically with research conducted in Brazil, where they selected women who had health problems connected to hormone imbalances. All women filled in a health questionaire with all their symptoms and the intensity. Their blood hormone profile (estradiol) was also monitored. These blood tests were repeated every 4 months within all women who practiced HYT as well as a monthly review of their symptoms. The results were very positive – estradiol levels increased in all the women within 4 months of practice, without the use of any medication. The intensity of menopause symptomes decreased to zero or if there still were any, they were near zero. The practice of HYT helps to create an optimal, well balanced level of reproductive hormones in a woman’s body. There is also a suggestion that it can bring benefit in thyroid conditions too.
You can find more information about HYT on her website Dinah Rodriguez. On her website you can also find results from her research. For easier access you can download her scientific research here: Yoga decdreases insomnia in postmenopausal women

No previous knowledge of yoga is required. Once learned the whole sequence can be practiced within 30 minutes.
HYT is taught in an 8 hours course either within 4 weeks or during a weekend workshop. When women register, I send out a health questionnaire which they need to complete and send back to me. This is very important as I can adjust exercises according to each individual needs. Also this health questionnaire serves as a base line date and you can monitor your progress each month by filling in the intensity of symptoms. Before the start of the class I will send out some pre-reading on workshop content so women can familiarise themselves with it. Within the 8 hours course women will learn the whole sequence of exercise, breathing techniques and anti-stress exercises. At the course I will hand out materials with the exercises so women will have something to look into when they practice at home.
The effects of the HYT depends on the intensity of practice. I would recommend starting with 4-5x per week and each month evaluate your symptoms. I would appreciate any feedback and will be available via email or phone for consultation or for additional classes.
